A whole World(s) of drama

So I've finally gotten around to watching the pairs free from Nice 2012. I think I've been stringing it out because its so good that I don't want it to end. As we all remember the short program was packed full of shocks with three Russian pairs making mistakes, so the free was poised to be one hell of a contest.
So we come firstly to Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov. Their free programme was so beautiful and so flowing but unfortunately there was one small mistake when they didn't quite get their final lift up. What was more surprising than this mistake was the fact that neither of Eurosport's commentators picked up on it, spending several minutes bewildered about the score downgrade when I was sitting yelling a the TV "its because they missed a lift! She didn't go up on the last lift!" Now as much as I love Eurosport's commentary team (and we all know how deeply I love Nicky Slater) I think that its absolutely ridiculous that two men who apparently watch this sport for a living couldn't spot a mistake that fans at home had all noticed straight away. Then we had Han Cong and Sui Wenjing. Oh my goodness what a team they are. Their routine was unbelievable and had TWO quad throws in it. Let me say that again TWO QUADS. She is 16 and he's 19. And they did two quads. Not only that but a stunning flamenco too. I see big things for them, I think by the time Sochi comes around they'll be a force to be reckoned with. Then we have the magnificent specimen of leather pants clad Russian sexiness that is Maxim Trankov. He and his partner put in a performance that was nothing short of spectacular, an absolute colossus of a performance. To put in perspective how good it was they were eight points behind Savchenko and Solkowy going into the free and ended up less than a tenth of a mark behind them. As Eurosport elegantly put it they were literally 'a death spiral away from being world champions.' As for Savchenko and Solkowy their program was weirdly sloppy and didn't seem to feature much linking choreography at all and the end bit just seemed to stutter to a stop. It just didn't seem like a world championship routine. And then finally there was Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran. Their routine wasn't flawless but it was charming and had a lovely atmosphere to it and their reactions on hearing they'd won bronze were absolutely adorable just so spontaneous and genuine and full of excitement. So things may not have been exactly as we expected but there were still plenty of highlights. Stay tuned for some fashion files folks...
